Speech, Sex, and Imposition

The purpose of this post is to chart some specifically Satanic religious ground in the debate over free speech within liberal democracies. I argue for a position on communication as imposition and maintain that the frequent calls from free speech advocates for meeting hate speech with simply more speech from its intended victims in the hopes of bolstering a robust intellectual climate for open debate are similar to concern expressed over whether victims of sexual assault performed proper resistance, especially in the form of saying no. Rather than burdening victims and would-be victims of aggressive speech and behavior with the additional burden of more speech, I advocate for speakers accepting full responsibility for communication as an imposition on others’ sovereign silence. I draw analogies in the discussion to the practices of consent and cooperation in BDSM. If you consent to find out more, click here.
